colposcopy

Colposcopy

Colposcopy is a gynecological diagnostic procedure that allows a detailed examination of the cervix, vagina, and external genital area using a specialized optical instrument called a colposcope.

The examination helps detect abnormal cervical changes at an early stage, including inflammation, precancerous lesions, and other cervical abnormalities.

How Is the Procedure Performed?

Colposcopy is performed in a gynecological examination chair and is similar to a routine pelvic examination. The physician uses a colposcope, which remains outside the body, to magnify and closely examine the cervix. If necessary, special solutions are applied to the cervix to highlight abnormal areas and improve visualization.

Is Colposcopy Painful?

Colposcopy is generally painless and typically takes 10–20 minutes to complete. Some patients may experience mild discomfort similar to that of a routine gynecological examination.

Why Is Colposcopy Important?

Colposcopy plays a vital role in the early detection of cervical diseases and helps physicians make timely diagnostic and treatment decisions, contributing to better women's health outcomes.
