Breast Care After Childbirth

Whether or not you plan to breastfeed, it is common for your breasts to become firm and engorged around 2–3 days after delivery, especially if your baby is not breastfeeding frequently. This is caused by milk engorgement, which can lead to breast fullness, discomfort, and pain. If left untreated, severe engorgement may increase the risk of mastitis (breast inflammation).

 

The management of breast engorgement differs depending on whether you are breastfeeding or formula feeding.

 

If You Are Breastfeeding

 

Emptying the breasts helps relieve fullness and encourages an adequate milk supply.

  • If possible, position your baby so that their chin points toward the firm area of the breast during feeding.

  • Applying warm compresses or taking a warm shower before breastfeeding may help improve milk flow.

  • Wear a well-fitting, supportive bra made from natural fabrics for added comfort.

  • Breast engorgement is generally less common after subsequent pregnancies.

 

If You Are Formula Feeding

 

If you are not breastfeeding, avoid stimulating your breasts, as this may increase milk production.

  • Do not express breast milk unless specifically advised by your healthcare provider.

  • To relieve discomfort, apply a warm compress before feeding and a cold compress afterward, if needed.

  • Wear a firm, supportive bra continuously, day and night, for 1–2 weeks.

 

Nipple Care

 

During the first week after childbirth, an incorrect latch may cause cracked or sore nipples. Preventing nipple damage is very important.

  • Ensuring your baby has a proper latch is the best way to prevent nipple trauma.

  • Do not use soap or antiseptic solutions on your nipples, as they can dry the skin and make cracks worse.

  • After each feed, express a few drops of breast milk, apply it to the nipples, and allow them to air dry. Breast milk has natural healing properties that promote tissue repair.

  • Warm air exposure may also help soothe sore nipples.

If nipple pain is severe or persists for more than one week, consult a healthcare professional.
