Is the Second Childbirth Less Painful Than the First? Myth or Reality?

Is the Second Childbirth Less Painful Than the First? Myth or Reality?

In most cases, a second childbirth is shorter than the first because the cervix has already undergone structural changes during the previous delivery. After a vaginal birth, the cervix becomes more cone-shaped, whereas before childbirth it is typically cylindrical. In addition, the muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor are generally more flexible, allowing the cervix to dilate more quickly once regular labor begins.

However, a shorter labor does not necessarily mean a less painful one. Although the duration of labor is often reduced, the intensity of contractions and labor pain may be similar to that experienced during the first childbirth.

Every pregnancy and delivery is unique, and the course of labor depends on many factors, including maternal health, fetal position and size, uterine contractions, and the progress of labor.
